British sparkling wines are now getting called British Fizz and with the UK wine industry applying for protected name status, the term might be here to say.
With competition fierce from champagne and prosecco, British winemakers are determined to have a name recognised across the world for their wine.
Sam Lindo, chairman of the UK Vineyard Association and winemaker at Camel Valley vineyard in Cornwall, said: “The issue of what to call British wine was on the agenda of the first meeting of the vineyards association 50 years ago and has never been resolved.
"No one’s ever going to agree on the name so maybe we have to roll with the name that people are already using and protect that name before we lose it.”
The term came about after New York bar owner Jason Hicks used it on his wine Manu.
