Meerlust Merlot 75cl in Gift Tin - South African Red Wine

Meerlust Merlot Red Wine 75cl is the perfect wine gift. Meerlust, one of the Cape's most historic wine estates, was originally planted in 1693. In 1756, it was purchased by the first Myburgh and has been the pride of the family ever since. Today, after seven generations, Hannes Myburgh, the present owner, continue the great family tradition of winemaking.

Don’t be fooled by the label, this is not a pure Merlot. Meerlust’s exceptional winemaker, Chris Williams, has slipped 8% Cabernet Franc (for structure and freshness) and 4.5% Petit Verdot (for polish and floral aromas) in the mix. And we think it might be his best yet when it comes to this expression. Opulent and dark, it displays intense blackberry, damson, dark chocolate, cherry, raspberry and spiced plum crumble. It’s just a joy to drink on any occasion, and we love that Meerlust wines have all become vegan-friendly since the 2011 vintage. Open it on those dark, cold nights when only comfort food and a glass of warming red will suffice. This is a juicy, opulent and rich wine that is a perfect example of the variety.

Tasting Note

The dark fruit and opulence of the wine is immediately apparent. We have been refining the viticulture to produce more balanced, flavourful fruit. Intense dark brambly fruit on the nose, mulberry, liquorice and damson plum with hints of dark chocolate and spice, tempered by a stony minerality. The medium-full bodied palate offers generous, ripe, pure Merlot fruit with refreshing acidity, structured yet silky tannins and pronounced length and minerality. There is a core of juiciness, opulence and richness typical of the variety, while the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot lend greater complexity to the wine.
